Dr. Jean-Luc Portelli is a European-trained hair restoration surgeon based in Malta, known for his meticulous approach to natural results, donor preservation, and long-term hair loss planning. He earned his medical degree (MD) from the University of Malta and spent several formative years working within the hospital system across multiple medical and surgical specialties. This broad clinical foundation provided him with an in-depth understanding of anatomy, wound healing, and patient-centred surgical care—principles that continue to define his work in hair transplantation today.
During his early training, Dr. Portelli explored various international approaches to hair restoration, including observational experience at clinics in Turkey. This exposure highlighted the wide variation in global standards. It reinforced his commitment to practising hair transplantation at a high European medical level, with an emphasis on safety, precision, and ethical patient care.
His advanced development came through hands-on European training, most notably under Dr. Christian Bisanga through ECAMS. This mentorship played a pivotal role in shaping Dr. Portelli’s philosophy and technique, particularly in refined hairline design, donor management, implantation with the implanter pen, and strategic planning for progressive hair loss.
Dr. Portelli has also participated in numerous FUE Academy conferences and specialised surgical workshops, including advanced training with the Trivellini system alongside highly experienced international surgeons. Through these programs, he gained extensive exposure to a wide range of extraction systems, incision techniques, graft handling protocols, and implantation strategies—allowing him to refine a method that prioritises both natural density and long-term donor safety.
Complementing his surgical expertise, Dr. Portelli holds a Certification in Trichology from the World Trichology Society. This enables him to diagnose scalp and hair disorders accurately and to integrate medical therapy with surgical treatment, offering patients a truly comprehensive and personalised approach rather than a one-size-fits-all procedure.
Today, Dr. Portelli’s practice focuses on ultra-refined FUE hair transplantation, emphasizing implantation with the implanter pen, conservative donor harvesting, natural and age-appropriate hairline design, and evidence-based medical management.
