About

Started to notice thinning when I was about 27.  Didn't think too much about it, but over the last 2 years noticed an increase of hairs in the sink and sunshine on the scalp.  I have diffuse thinning in the front and fairly normal loss in the temples, so it wasn't anything that some hair product and careful styling couldn't handle.

A year ago I broke up with a girl after a 5-year relationship, and that's when I really started to be anxious about it.  I immediately started Propecia (or generic Fin, in this case), but each new date I went on, I couldn't help but think they were staring at my hairline.

Am I the worst case ever?  Hardly.  But I couldn't help but lose confidence since I was 'back out there' with a lot less hair this time.  I visited Dr. Cooley in April 2011, and then did a bunch of follow-up research and discussion.  Decided that life is too short to wonder 'what if,' so pulled the trigger.

Procedure 1

7 months A.T. !!! Checking back in after 7 months, hard to believe it's gone on that long.  A few highlights... First, everything played out exactly as they said it would.  The instructions, the hair falling out, the hair growth, at least in my case, was exactly as it was described to me.  The little transplants fell out after about two weeks, the hair seemed very thin for the next 2-3 months, then I noticed the hair growing back.   At 7 months, the transplant hair is now as long as my other hair, and I've had multiple haircuts where I have a hard time telling the difference.  There is no question my hair is thicker and no question it has made a difference.  And the effect on my confidence has been immeasurable.  Even if it doesn't make a tremendous difference in your appearance (and relatively speaking, mine doesn't), I feel like it did, and I carry myself that way. I still feel the scar area occasionally as just a slight itching, but it's VERY hard to see.  I have tried to find it in a mirror and not been able to, it's that small.   Negatives?  Dr. Cooley is involved, but not as much as you think.  He does the cutting and the design, but the transplants were done by the staff, and so it's only as good as his nurses hands.  Plus, I had asked not to modify my hairline, because I wanted it to blend and for it to be completely discreet.  Despite that, they did add a bit to my hairline, specifically they bulked up the front portion and made one section very thick.  I see that every day when I look in the mirror, because the hair is very obviously darker and thicket than surrounding hair.  I doubt anyone would ever be able to figure it out, but I know.   Also, the follow-up from their office is lackluster at best.  When I had my follow-up visit to remove the stitches, Dr Cooley did not see me, it was just a nurse.  And my 6-month date came and went without a call from them, despite their claim to want to see a 6-month checkup.  Also, I asked for pictures from the set they take before/during/after surgery, and they said they would make me a copy and send them to me, and they never did. Future concerns?  I have been taking Propecia for 1.5 years before this, and felt like the combination of this surgery and the pill would help to give me years of more hair.  But I recently developed really sore breasts, and even lumps.  The doctor told me to go off the Fin, so I'm stuck with a choice of man-boobs or losing my hair.  And of course I know that if I drop the Fin, the hairline loss will accelerate, exposing the transplant and I'll be in worse shape in 5 years than I was.  But we will see I guess. Conclusion?  If you're thinking about getting a transplant, do your research and spend some time thinking about it.  I don't regret it, but it's not without issues like I mentioned above.  I worry that I'll be in worse shape in 5 years than if I had just let it go. If you have the money and really feel it will make a difference, not just physically but mentally, I say go for it.  But don't go into debt or sell a car or anything crazy.  I am fortunate to have the money that it wasn't a big deal, but I wouldn't sell the farm for this.  Also, remember that you are changing your hair, which may mean the styling as well.  My hair is thicker now in front, but it also lays differently than before and I am still figuring out how to style it well. I would recommend Dr. Cooley, I think he did a good job (when I saw him).  The surgery was really a piece of cake, that should be least of your concerns. Any questions of me, please ask!  I will get around to pics someday, I promise!

Procedure 1

6 days A.T. First day back to the 'real world' I took the first real shower this morning before the first day back at the office.  Without letting the water hit the grafts directly I was able to wash my hair thoroughly and massage the grafts.  A lot of the scabbing was removed with just that wash, though some still remains. I had to comb the hair forward a bit more than I normally would to hide the obvious dark patches (scabs), but otherwise it was a normal day.  I got no questions or strange looks, and the scar in the back is undetectable. Without being able to spray all day, I do notice the itch quite a bit.  And overall, the head still feels tight, but I would not describe it as painful. I am scheduled for suture removal on 3/8/12, can't wait!

Procedure 1

4 days A.T. Just a quick checkpoint, everything seems to be following along by the book.  Been spraying the area constantly to keep the grafts moist, been wearing Saran wrap most of the day.  I have almost no pain at all, just a general tightness around the incision and a bit of tightness in my forehead.  I can see some minimal swelling in my browline, but it's so small I don't think anyone else would ever see it. Almost all the redness is gone, only some dark scab areas remain, and now the grafts have small white scabs around their base, which also is normal.   Also, when I allow it to air dry for a few hours, I notice the itchiness pops up.  Keeping it moist definitely is essential those first couple days. It's Monday, I am returning to work Wednesday, so I'll update then when I emerge from hibernation.  Will be interesting to see how well I can cover up the scabs.

Procedure 1

Evening of procedure Just  a quick update - finished 1900 grafts today with Dr Cooley.  I got there at 7am and was out by 4:30.  The procedure was pretty easy, no pain while you're there, they do a good job of medicating and keeping you numb throughout.  The only uncomfortable part of the work is keeping your neck and head still the whole time, so they can work and so you can watch movies.  I would recommend to anyone to make sure you stand up and stretch a bit if you can. I was still numb when I got home so I napped for about 3 hours.  The pain set in later, and I've taken the Demerol and Valium to try to get some sleep.   It's not a terrible pain, but it's just hard to rest when you can't put your head down without discomfort! More to come!  I have pics and will be posting soon.

Procedure 1

2 days A.T. after transplant Checking in - 2 days later,  It's almost exactly 48 hours after the procedure, things feel ok.  Pain has largely been replaced by just general tightness and some numbness.  Sort of amazing that it doesn't hurt more.  I'm also detecting the first signs of itch, but I think that's also just an urge to want to run my fingers over it. I washed it this morning and have sprayed it with saran wrap all day.  Redness is dying down a bit, the scabs and individual hairs are becoming more visible.  I haven't noticed any swelling outside of the general tightness feeling, but I've taken the steroids the last 2 mornings. Slept fairly well last night but not great.  Took an Aleve and a Valium, got me through the night anyway.  I think each night will get better since the pain is dying down, I haven't taken anything for pain today and feel fine. Have been taking lots of pics, though I think the quality is lacking, I will be posting all of them soon from the first couple days.
