Question:

After suffering hair loss for years, I had a follicular unit transplant procedure done by a reputable doctor in Sept 2009. While I no longer appear quite as bald as before, the transplanted hair is still kinky and frizzy almost 16 months later. Will this hair ever soften? I never had frizzy hair before.

Answer:

It’s quite common for transplanted hair to grow in in a kinky or frizzy fashion for some months after hair transplant surgery. Normally, this change in hair quality will subside in time and the hair will become more tame and begin to take on its normal appearance. However, if follicular unit grafts are poorly placed or damaged, it can result in a permanently unnatural appearance.

At 16 months post-op, you are definitely nearing the point where the hairs should have matured but there is still time for improvement. In my opinion, if it has not sorted itself out by the 2 year mark then it is not likely to change. Depending on the cause of the problem, further transplantation may help correct this.

I recommend that you consult our interactive map and locate the prescreened quality hair restoration physicians nearest you. Our recommended physicians are very experienced in all manner of hair transplant repair.
