A significant amount of our patients come from another country. In those cases the initial evaluation and surgery plan is performed remotely via photos/Videos.
The following case is a great example of the challenges A clinic can face when accepting foreign patients who did not have a hands on evaluation before booking. Things can look very different after shaving the scalp at the clinic.
Our 38 years old patient came in for a hair transplant with Dr Pareja. The plan was to recreate the hairline and improve some density in the crown area.
As part of preparation for surgery , it is required to shave the scalp, in particular the donor area where the grafts are extracted from.
To the Doctor’s surprise, 2 conditions were discovered which turned from what seems to bea straight forward surgery to a very challenging one.
The following photo shows the donor after shaving the scalp moments before surgery began.
Folliculitis - Acne like condition, in this case on back of the scalp (main part of the donor). Caused by follicles getting infected and inflated. This makes the donor limited and required Dr Pareja to be very articulate during the extraction and work around the infected area. Folliculitis is treated with antibiotics.
Cutis verticis gyrata - A condition where the scalp is thickening and appears to have “folds”. It makes the surgery more difficult when implanting the grafts, due to the instability and movement of the skin while doing so.
After a long day of surgery , Dr Pareja managed to overcame the technical obstacles of the surgery and achieve 3130 Grafts safely.
Fast forward 1 year and we are happy to present a successful outcome with very high graft survival rate! Also, the patient is committed to finasteride + Minoxidil daily
A hair transplant is a dynamic surgery.There could be a lot different variables, sometimes unexpected, that could affect the final outcome. For that reason it is crucial to perform vigorous research and choose a skilled surgeon so if obstacles do come up, it would be treated with the proper protocol to maximize the final result.
